
Joshua Monten is a Swiss-American dual citizen born near New York City. He studied literature and cultural anthropology at Duke University before beginning his dance studies. As a dancer he has worked with the Berner Ballett, Stadttheater Heidelberg, öff öff productions and DA MOTUS! and choreographers including Stijn Celis, Hofesh Shechter, Juha Marsalo and Tino Sehgal.
He regularly choreographs for ballet, opera, theatre and freelance dance productions, including for Stadttheater Bern, Theater St. Gallen, Ballet National du Rhin, Staatstheater Nürnberg, ZHdK, The Yard (USA), Theaterhaus Gessnerallee Zürich, Zentrum Paul Klee and Art Basel. He has been a dance lecturer at the HKB in Biel since 2021.
In 2012, Joshua Monten founded his own dance company, for which he created and internationally performed stage, outdoor and video dance productions such as „About Strange Lands and People“ (2012), „Kill Your Darlings“ (2015), „Doggy Style“ (2015), „Freude“ (2016), „Romeo, Romeo, Romeo“ (2018), „Game Theory“ (2020), „How to Do Things with Words“ (2022) and „Linearity“ (2023). In 2022, the dance company Joshua Monten received a three-year grant from the City of Bern to realise the „Counterfeit“ trilogy in the years 2022-2024.
