How can we listen with the body? How does movement change when we shift our attention, alter its texture, or allow another body to influence it?
This workshop draws on movement research developed through Louise Coetzer’s e.ID : A Fugue, exploring how we can use the body to listen, respond and think.
Through guided movement explorations, participants will investigate movement qualities, textures and physical treatments, working with breath, rhythm, repetition and variation. Exercises in listening and responding invite participants to shift between leading and following, sensing external impulses and discovering how movement can transform through interaction.
The workshop offers a space to explore physicality as a form of thinking - curious, responsive and constantly changing.
The workshop is led by Louise Coetzer, founder and Artistic Director of Darkroom Contemporary Dance Theatre, and choreographer of e.ID : A Fugue, together with dancers from the company. Coetzer is an award-winning South African multidisciplinary dance artist whose practice spans choreography, contemporary performance, screendance and digital and tech-based art.
Darkroom Contemporary is an award-winning South African interdisciplinary dance company working at the intersection of contemporary performance, digital media and new technologies. Rooted in South African lived experience, the company explores new possibilities for dance through live performance, screendance and interdisciplinary practice. Its work has been presented at Ars Electronica, Cinedans, POOL Movement Art Film Festival Berlin, the British Film Institute and Third Coast Festival.
This workshop offers participants an opportunity to encounter elements of the creative and physical research behind e.ID : A Fugue while developing their own approaches to movement, listening and response.
