Practicing Empathy #3
Yasmeen Godder
How do we connect to ourselves and to others? Yasmeen Godder has been exploring this fundamental question with her project 'Practicing Empathy' since 2019. So far, she has created three different performative shows in which she explores empathy as a fundamental ability to grasp complex relationships and deal with challenges. The focus is on the act of practicing in a performative setting to discover new ways of opening up and connecting with other people.
For the third part of her series, Yasmeen Godder has developed a solo for herself for the first time in her 25-year career. The piece is very physical, an intimate narrative in which she traces her work on the project through the challenges of the pandemic. What is the importance of sensitivity to oneself in the face of restriction, loss of control and isolation? The solo resembles a profound inner discovery: while constantly developing survival mechanisms, her dance unfolds in a dizzying way, recalling her own physical resources and finally finding a place of safety and connection.
