POOL 23 presents a selection of international dance film productions and is a meeting place for creative people from dance and film as well as the art and fashion scene. The festival focuses on films that create independent film choreographies from the close interplay of cinematic and dance movement. From over 1000 international film submissions with a maximum duration of 30 minutes, the POOL 23 curatorial team created three full-length programmes. The selected films - the PEARLS 23 - stand side by side on an equal footing, address different themes along the body, and reflect the aesthetic diversity of the format.
In addition to contemporary dance films, the festival will show historical works from the New York avant-garde scenes of the 70s and 80s on 15 September 2023 at Zion Church as part of the POOL Shine format. Among them is the 16mm film "The School of Hard Knocks" (1980) by Yoshiko Chuma and Jacob Burckhardt, which has been digitised in preparation for the festival. In an artist talk and workshop, Chuma, who will be in Berlin for the festival, will provide insights into her artistic work.
New this year is the digital journal POOL dives deeper, which reflects on artistic practice at the interface of dance and film, gathers interviews with artists and traces the historical search for the fomat POOL Shine.
After all screenings, the festival invites its guests to an informal get-together and exchange with the artists.

POOL - MOVEMENT ART FILM Festival Berlin was founded in 2007 and is based at DOCK 11. The film festival is characterised by its curatorial lineage, which combines the presentation of contemporary movement-based films and historical works within the POOL Shine format.
