Background
The flight forward led DOCK 11 into the digital space during the pandemic. The DOCKdigital lab network was born.

Questions, problems, needs
What experiences did we make in 2 years of digital art at the interface with the body? What problems and opportunities arose? What needs have emerged? How do we create continuity, exchange, networking and access?

Relevance
The game industry is a larger market than the film, theater and music "markets" combined. A very large and constantly growing number of players are looking for social contacts in gaming. At the same time, AI is rapidly entering almost all areas of our lives, and the smartphone has become indispensable as an omnipresent extension of the human body and mind. Artistic, critical, ethical-philosophical classifications and discourses are urgently needed. We don't want to leave digitalization to advertising and gaming, but to develop and contribute artistic, critical and mind- and body-expanding positions.

Communication
Programmers, game-, system-, 3D-designers and artists of the performing arts need time and space for

  • learning and understanding the different languages of the field
  • learning and understanding the different ways of working
  • for the alignment of ideas regarding deadlines / premieres
  • the assessment of each other's efforts
  • discourses regarding aesthetics, relevance, artistic themes, etc.
  • negotiating fee levels
  • good contracts they make with each other
  • exchange: programmers, game-, system-, 3D-designers are looking for artistic projects to contribute their competences in a meaningful and artistic way. In the digital labs and also on the possibly emerging databases, contacts can be made.

Offering, recognizing and using space for possibilities
Artists need time and space to explore digital possibilities in order to develop artistic concepts. Through

  • learning and understanding the different digital possibilities in laboratories accessible to artists
  • Database for projects, artists, service providers, festivals, videos, books, articles, etc. at the intersection of digital art and the body
  • Workshops or further education for artists, teachers, students in
technical and artistic use of digital soft- and hardware

Gesamtkunstwerk
How many projects do we know where the video, the sound, the choreography were developed individually and because of time / money pressure only came together in final rehearsals and then stood side by side on stage. In digital projects in VR, the programmers, game, system, 3D designers need knowledge of scenography, choreography and movement quality and the artists need basic knowledge of the computer programs. At some point in the DOCKdigital LAB, the programmers attended dance classes and the choreographers were able to operate the MoCap suits independently, for example. These actors, trained with such bridging skills, were to form the core of a permanent digital lab, from which further actors would be trained and constantly networked with their new knowledge.

  • Further training for scenographers, choreographers, directors, etc in the basics of digital performing arts.
  • Further education for programmers, game-, system-, 3D-designers in movement-research, scenography, dance-, theater-, performing arts-history and theory.

Networking | Public
Equipment, know how and information should be exchanged by all actors. Equipment acquired through project funds should be constantly used and accessible.

  • Database about equipment, who has what, when and where.
    • Database about know how, who can do what, where and when
    • Online wiki about technical innovations, manuals, problem solutions for motion capture, game engines, etc.
    • database about festivals, funding opportunities, network meetings, artists, theory
    • annual decentralized festival in Berlin, with workshops, symposia, etc.
    • networking with other festivals in Germany and worldwide

Access
The equipment is expensive, the know how with the equipment on the free market unaffordable and should be accessible for artists and programmers, game-, system-, 3D-designers, if they work artistically. Care should be taken to avoid dumping competition with non-funded providers.

Proposal 1: a permanent laboratory for digital performing arts
Although the DOCKdigital lab is located in DOCK 11, it is still completely independent and autonomous in its structures. It is technically very well equipped and has purchased a studio of 200sqm in 2022. The cost of credit and utilities is 3000 euros net /cold. The studio is divisible into 3 cells, so that several projects can work simultaneously. The cells are divisible with sound reducing curtains. The space can be used as a performance space or also as an exhibition space. The DOCKdigital Lab is not sponsored by the DOCK ART Theater and operates independently of location for all venues. Pop-up labs can also take place citywide, nationally and internationally. The operator could also be the Association for digital performing art, which has not yet been founded. Or an operator group could be found.

Proposal 2: Association for digital performing arts
An association for digital performing arts should be founded. Possibly as a subgroup of Dachverband Tanz, tanz:digital or Laft. Here EU funds could be acquired for further education and networking. The association could also have its headquarters in the DOCK digital Lab. There will be an office space available from summer 2023.

THANK YOU
Thanks to all the funders of DOCKdigital: Tanz:Digital, Dachverband Fonds, Fonds Darstellende Künste, Fonds Soziokultur, NPN, Kulturgemeinschaften, Senat Berlin, Neustart Kultur, Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
Thanks to all artists, programmers, game-, system-, 3D-designers and helpers.
