As part of the international residency program at DOCK 11 Berlin, choreographer and performer Ivan Estegneev will present a public lecture & outreach event reflecting on contemporary dance, migration, and artistic continuity across borders.
The lecture will trace the development of contemporary dance in Russia over the last decades, drawing from Ivan Estegneev’s own artistic journey and long-standing contribution to the field. As co-founder of the renowned Dialogue Dance Company and former collaborator of the Gogol Center in Moscow, Estegneev has been part of an influential generation of artists shaping independent contemporary performance practices in Russia and internationally.
Ivan will adress the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the resulting migration of artists and cultural workers. Estegneev will speak about his own relocation to Germany in 2022 and reflect on the experiences of colleagues and collaborators who are now living and working across Europe, Canana and other parts of the world. The lecture will address how displacement influences artistic identity, collaboration, and the preservation of cultural networks within the international contemporary dance community.
Further, Ivan Estegneev will introduce his current residency project at DOCK 11, including insights into the creative process of his new work “Made in USSR. Anticipating Dance.” He will also discuss future perspectives of the residency program and the planned international collaboration with La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, NY in 2027.
The event aims to create an open space for dialogue, exchange, and critical reflection on art, migration, memory, and the social role of contemporary performance.
