The class merges contemporary dance approaches, floor work, strengthening exercises, and musical rhythm. It represents a continuing exploration of Carson’s career and choreographic practice in how different approaches and understandings enhance the artistry of the performer. It is designed to prepare the student for what happens after the class, whether it be rehearsal, audition, further training, or the ongoing grind of life. The class begins with an interlooping of improvisational movement modalities and defined exercises that bring awareness and expansion, which challenge the interplay between the physical and mental state. Dancing through circles, lines, spirals, and bodily connections of gestural and full body sequences that swipe, wipe, swirl, and segue into gravity-affirming rolls and low-slung leap leaps challenging our understanding of dimensions. The class incorporates physical technical exercises, ideas of neuroanatomy, cognitive relations to others and the environment, and investigates sensations as both feeling and emotional states. The class accumulates in dancing phrasework built on Carson’s current choreographic exploration, inviting the mover to fluctuate between subtle nuances of interpretation and an open explorative environment that encourages investigations between one’s abilities, and the emerging interactions with others in the room. This is all accompanied by a playlist that incorporates musical approaches from around the world that contribute to groove and joy.
