The class focuses on exploring ways that allow one to access calmness and softness while moving dynamically. The class looks into how release of energy is achieved through surrendering to gravity and understanding the coherent organisation of the body through breathing and weight shifting. Using set materials and improvisation we will practice letting movement to smoothly pass through the body with clarity in its navigation and intention, resulting in fluid exchange of inner space and exterior space. The class aims to practice physical strength and stability, while maintaining internal softness.

Aya Toraiwa is a Japanese-born dancer, teacher, and maker. Born in Tokyo, lived between England and Japan since 1999. Lives and works in Berlin since 2016.
Her dance practice deals with her fascination with exploration on how bodies shift between being objects, material that takes up a space, and being a place where an event happens, and how a body becomes a medium of communication, while playfully dealing with the fragility of sense making. Welcoming fragility, acknowledging every detail and careful listening lies at the core of her practice.
She studied Performing Arts and Moving Image department in Tama Art University and graduated from University of Brighton with a BA(hons) in Moving Image. As a performer she has recently collaborated/worked with Isabelle Schad, Wilhelm Gröner, Judith Sanchez Ruiz, Leipzig Oper, etc. Her Choreographic works have been shown in several platforms and festivals in Europe and Japan, and her film works in Canada, France and UK.
