Merce Cunningham Technique / William Forsyth's Improvisation Techniques
The week of classes is designed as an extended master class based on the merge of very structured Merce Cunningham technique and improvisation techniques by William Forsythe.
We will start with clearly defined principles of movement and will alter, and complicate them each day leading to a dance combination based on the learned material with the room for your own investigation and improvisation.
Structure of each day:
Warm-up. Concentrated on mobility and strength of the torso, hips, and feet (Cunningham technique)
Class / Exercise (based on Cunningham technique)
Investigating William Forsyth's improvisation techniques
Cross floor / Motion exercises combining both techniques
Choreography session
In Brief, Merce Cunningham technique is concentrated on developing physical and mental strength (coordination), being able to perform movements of high complexity with mathematical precision and full control of the body.
William Forsythe's improvisation techniques are based on the investigation of space and visualized objects (lines, circles, shapes, etc) and interaction with them.
Andrii received his 12 years of dance education in Kyiv, Ukraine in the school of Virsky National Dance Company. After two years working with Virsky, he left the company to experience and learn contemporary dance and jazz. Since then Andrii was performing with a few contemporary dance companies in Kyiv, participating in workshops and classes in London with Akram Khan Company and Richard Alston Dance Company. It led him to co-found Totem Dance School in Kyiv Ukraine and pursued his choreographer career along with his dance career.
Andrii's professional dance career brought him around the world performing with music stars like David Garrett, in productions like America's Got Talent finalist's "Illuminate", in Phantom of the Opera amongst the musicals, and currently, he is performing in Komische Oper Berlin.
At the same time, he was choreographing numerous pieces for the dance festivals and performances in Ukraine with Totem Dance Group, and various shows for Crystal Cruises, TV, and large events.
