This class is welcoming everyone. We intend to create a Safe(r) Environment for the LGBTQ+ community, of course this is our Intention for all our classes.
Classes follow the traditional structure of a ballet class, moving with our skeletal, muscular, and emotional bodies to find both functionality and space to make wildly imaginative choices.
Queer Ballet is a new approach to the technique of classical ballet that centers and uplifts bodies that have often been othered in dance and the real-world through a queer and contemporary lens, letting queer people co-create worlds, fairy tales, and story ballets of their own.
The class is rooted in a place of collective care and dismantling of the cis-hetero-patriarchy in and beyond the dance classroom. We explore rigor and love towards our queer and trans bodies as we re-engage with an art form that has traditionally been kept away from us. How can re-engaging with this art form be a practice of joy and resistance in equal measure?
Adam Russell-Jones wurde im Vereinigten Königreich geboren und lebt in Berlin. Der Künstler begann mit zwölf Jahren seine Ballettausbildung an der Elmhurst School for Dance in Birmingham und wechselte später an die Royal Ballet School in London, die er 2014 abschloss. Bei seinem Abschluss wurde er mit dem Dame Ninnette DeValois Award als Most Outstanding Graduate ausgezeichnet.
Adam trat dem Stuttgarter Ballett bei, wo er in Arbeiten von William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian und Marco Goecke tanzte. Während seiner Zeit am Stuttgarter Ballett nominierte ihn der Deutsche Bühnenverein für den Deutschen Theaterpreis Der Faust als Bester Darsteller / Tanz für seine Rolle in Le spectre de la rose von Marco Goecke.
2017 wurde Adam Compagniemitglied des Nederlands Dans Theater, wo er sein zeitgenössisches Repertoire erweiterte und seine Ausbildung sowie sein Tanzverständnis in Frage stellte. Die Arbeit mit dem NDT2 stellte Adam vor körperliche Herausforderungen und ermöglichte es ihm, in Spielstätten auf der ganzen Welt aufzutreten, darunter Theater in Paris und New York. Während seiner Zeit in den Niederlanden performte Adam in Arbeiten von Sol Leon und Paul Lightfoot, Alexander Ekman und Marina Mascarell.
Adam wechselte vom NDT2 ans Staatsballett Hannover unter der neuen Leitung des Choreografen Marco Goecke. Seit 2022 arbeitet Adam als freischaffender Künstler in Berlin und erweitert seine Performancepraxis im Kontext zeitgenössischer Kunst. Seit 2023 entwickelt Adam eine Praxis als Solokünstler.
