PHASE FIELDS is a collaborative, embodied research and practice on dance and choreography in co-emergence with spatial sound composition and aural architecture. Approaching dance as a practice of kinaesthetic deep listening, a methodology evolves that connects spatial audio composition with conscious embodiment processes into choreographic practice.
Intersecting sound and dance as spatial media, space becomes an instrument and creative agent. Through physical properties of sound and the moving bodie’s perceptual and cognitive maps, spaces are revealed as multidimensional, sensory experiences. Physical environments and psychic landscapes are explored in different approaches to sound and movement creation.

Aural Somatics

Hearing originates from vibration detection, a receptive sensory experience that affects all the structural layers of our bodies. In contrast, listening is an active process in which one intentionally engages with acoustic space, discerning and interpreting auditory and affective signals. Sonic somatics is a physical, movement based deep listening practice that connects the exploration of embodied cellular consciousness informed by Body-Mind Centering with deep listening practices in the tradition of Pauline Oliveros. The process expands the field of auditory perception to include cellular, tactile and kinaesthetic awareness, evoking states of refined sensitivity where subtle textures, movements and spatial qualities of sound can be felt throughout the whole body. Within this deepened sensory awareness, sound becomes a medium to connect physical perception with imaginative experience. The interplay between sonic sensation, movement and spatial perception evokes a dreamstate, where boundaries between inner and outer, physical and psychic spaces become permeable.
