A practical workshop for actors and directors, dancers and choreographers, circus artists, and other performers.
The training focuses on the body and movement as storytelling tools, working both individually and in groups. We explore physical connection with partners, developing both individual physicality and group cohesion - how an ensemble can function as a unified mechanism on stage, how to build trust through physical work, and how to shape narrative and dynamics through interaction with scene partners.
The approach draws on theatre biomechanics (V. Meyerhold), Psychological Gesture (M. Chekhov), and Physical Action (K. Stanislavski), alongside contemporary practice in improvisation, movement dramaturgy, and scene composition.
The training moves between individual exercises, partner work, and group compositions. You'll work with both prepared text (bring your own or use provided material) and improvisation, discovering how physical action can support, contradict, or transform verbal meaning.
Schedule (28 working hours):
January 5-8: 10:30-13:00 & 14:30-18:00 (90-minute lunch break)
January 9: 10:30-13:00 & 13:30-15:00 (final showing and closure)
The organizer may adjust timings if needed.
We select participants based on:
- Your CV/training background
- A short statement about why this workshop, why now (200 words is plenty)
- Video links if you have them (not mandatory)
Maximum 25 participants. We're looking for a mix of backgrounds - the diversity is part of what makes it work.
Why January in Berlin?
Everyone's back from holidays, nothing's in production yet, people are actually available to focus. The city's cultural scene is gearing up for the year. Good time to be here if you're considering Berlin for future projects.
Also, January prices for accommodation are reasonable, and the park is actually beautiful in winter - different kind of atmosphere than summer workshops.
How to Apply
- Go to: nipai.org/programs/winter-physical-theatre-workshop
- Fill out the form, attach your materials. We respond within few days.
- If you have specific questions not covered on the website, email info@nipai.org
Note: This is intensive training, not a masterclass where you watch demonstrations. Come ready to work, sweat, and probably discover some muscles you forgot you had.
NIPAI has been organizing international workshops since 2000. This particular format has evolved from feedback and experience - it's the distilled version of what actually works.
