„Wellspring” arises as a quiet, persistent and radical work on dreaming, taking night dreams as a vital portal to envision and implement communal change. „Wellspring’s” goal is to re-turn participants’ curiosity and attention to dreaming, and to bring back dreamings’ role as a powerful source of inner knowing. In times when most self-employed artists are struggling to build sustainable communities, dreaming arises as a tool for weaving instantaneous, deep, meaningful relationship with oneself, with the other and with the wider community. Dreaming is the key to well being, as it continuously mirrors the (subconscious) place one is in, and mercilessly points to the necessities that need one’s response. „Wellspring” is a regular, weekly, performative, open to everyone practice of dreaming, spread around five months of 2020, from January to May.

During that time, I am committing to sustain and lead weekly meetings, 22 in total, during which we will explore the profound, fluid, interconnected web of dreaming. I am especially dedicated to making it a regular practice, establishing a clear rhythm that fosters continuity, intensity and depth. I aim at building a community of dreamers, that courageously looks within and makes a change without. The practice will take place on EDEN in Berlin and will be open to anyone interested. Everyone is invited to participate, dance, speak or listen to „opening a dream”. During each of the weekly sessions, lasting 3 hours each, we will work with a single, recent dream brought by one of the attendees, and we will „open” it through words, music and movement. “To open a dream” means to distinguish basic levels on which the dream simultaneously unfolds: to catch and precise its’ storyline, and its’ relations with reality; to discover repeatable patterns; to find a question, which forms its’ compositional axis and leads to a secret, revealing the way in which a dream can support an immediate shift into a new reality.

By immersing into this layering process, the original dreamer and all the secondary dreamers receive multidimensional access to night’s material, and clear directions on how to implement change. „Dream opening” is a practice developed and taught by dr Catherine Shainberg in the School of Images in New York, where I am a practitioner and a teacher. Since 2010, I am exploring ways in which dreaming can be used in performative context, enhancing the work on imagination and embodiment. I have developed variety of practices and teaching formats, e.g. weekend sessions of „Dreaming Reality”, 3 weeks’ program of „Dream States”, online classes „Open yourself to dreaming”.

I also use „dream opening” in my performance practice (e.g. in the upcoming trio „Eye Sea” to be premiered on the 17 th of December 2019 in HAU, Berlin), in mentoring formats (e.g. HZT Berlin), and in the theoretical approach (practice based PhD „Embodied attention as the foundation for being present” at the Polish Film School in Łódź). Moreover, for the past 2 years in Claudia Hill’s atelier in Berlin, I have been organizing „dream opening” sessions, during which we met and worked on individual dreams. I would like these meetings to take a broader, regular and movement-oriented form. Therefore, I am applying to Gwaerthler Foundation for support. With the financial aid from the organization, I can rent out a studio at DOCK11 EDEN, promote the event, invite special guests, document the work, and commit to being in Berlin for that extended amount of time.

This subsidy will allow my research to grow, and to spread it to more people. In the face of challenges we are witnessing nowadays, there is no time to lose. We are in need for new imaginations, and dreaming is the way to weave them. In „wellspring” dream is embodied in a performative manner, inevitably inviting the presence of an audience, yet also carrying a direct, experiential, insightful value for all the participants. On one hand, the session resembles a performance, with a defined, improvised score of going deeper through singular images, dream’s storyline, patterns to dancing through a question, and communaly addressing a necessity of the dream. On the other hand, it carries a highly healing value, inviting participants to experience different logics of being, to understand other modes of living, and to respond to the necessity of a dream, finding a solution to a posed challenge. It playfully integrates this response-ability into the deepest tissues of a body, returning attendees to their infinite source of creativity. It imprints a particular way of noticing and clearing what is not working, of facing difficulties, removing dysfunctional patterns, and rooting oneself in the light. „Wellspring” is conceived as an on-going, free of charge practice. Every session will host a single guest, a person who will help me to add an extra performative touch to the event. This will allow for the continuity of the process, while providing necessary fluidity of participation.

In the first place, I would like to invite people, who were already involved in the kamikaze „dream opening” sessions: Claudia Hill, Mor Demer, Pauline Payenne, Marton Peter Nagy, Jule Flierl, to name a few. Each of them with their „special skill” will propose a direction, focus and a particular practice for that week’s dreaming session, e.g. using costume and scenography, dance, cinematographic approach, tai-chi, voice to enhance listening and express the versatile layers of the dream. Guests will also open the practice to new currents, flow in with their own guests, and help to broaden the banks of dreaming community.

*** In his book: “24/7 Late capitalism and the end of sleep”, Jonathan Crary points to sleeping and dreaming being the last resorts of humans’ independence, spheres that resist capitalism, and foster connection. By the marketed reality they are pronounced obsolete, while they actually allow us to make sense of things, understand what we need, and to take adequate action. Dreaming generates brilliant and attainable changes. „Wellspring” aims at dreaming them into being.

*** Anna Nowicka is a choreographer and performer. She is a graduate of the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD), holds an MA Choreography at the HfS Ernst-Busch / HZT in Berlin and MA Psychology at the Warsaw University. In recent years, Anna has developed a methodology for artistic creation based on her long term interest in dreams, physical actions and imagination. Her research focuses on the power of perception to expand the body into a state of constant becoming, courageously plunging and embracing the unknown. She has recently finished her practice-based PhD: “Embodied attention as the foundation for being present”.

Recognition for Anna’s work includes the DAAD Prize and choreographic scholarships: Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, Tanzstipendium from the city of Berlin, scholarship from Movement Research in NYC. Her performance: “fire is raging in your hair” won the 100GRAD Festival in HAU, Berlin, and her solo: “the truth is just a plain picture. said bob.” was selected for the Polish Dance Platform, Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, and the Polish-Israeli Dance Platform in Tel Aviv. Since 2010, her individual choreographic practice is connected with the Art Stations Foundation by Grażyna Kulczyk in Poznań .

Her performance “Raw Light” (2017) was selected for the Polish Dance Network. Her latest solo: “This Is The Real Thing” (2018) was chosen as one of the most interesting works of the past year for the International Showcase in Nowy Theater in Warsaw, and for the Polish Dance Platform 2019. Her latest work is supported by the Etape Danse network and will premiere on the 17th December 2019 in HAU, Berlin. Anna is a dreaming practitioner and a teacher of the School of Images of Catherine Shainberg in New York, deepening the work on imagery with Bonnie Buckner. She is living and working between Berlin and Warsaw.
