In his contemporary ballet training, Christian Schwaan combines elements from the Russian, French and American schools to create a lively training of the body with a placing structure and promotion of musicality through interesting dynamic changes. An important part of his training is to teach the joy of movement. He received his training at the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin and continued his education in the methodology of Truman Finney, which is taught at the Hamburg Ballet and its associated school.
